What are generic drugs?
Generic drugs or brand name of drugs!!! Great confusion among the users to be frank and honest the generic drugs are same as like branded drugs. Generic drugs have same dosage, adverse effects, effects, intended use, safety and risky properties that branded drugs have. The pharmacological effects of generic drugs are same as the branded drugs. However, the cost of generic drugs is low compared to the branded drugs. The brand name drug and the generic drugs have same effects.
For example one of the most popular generic drugs used for diabetes is metformin and the brand name of the drug is Glucophage. The generic drug used for hypertension is metoprolol and the brand name of the drug is Lopressor. One of the main reasons for doubting the generic drugs because they are substantially cheaper compared to the branded drugs. Just the name of drugs is different but the working mechanism, its effects, and side effects are same. The FDA (US Food and Drug Administration) has proved that generic drugs are safe and effective as same as the branded drugs. The generic drugs are cheaper because the manufacturers of the generic drugs don’t have much investment to develop new types of drugs.
If a company wants to bring the new type of drug into the market it has to spend enough money for research, development, and promotion of the particular drug. If the copyrights or patent of the particular drug is granted the company has exclusive rights to sell the drugs as long as the patent is to the effect. Once the rights expire the manufacturers must apply FDA for the permission to manufacturing and promoting the generic brand drugs.
This is done without the start up costs and other companies manufacture and sell the generic drugs easily and cheaply. However, when many companies manufacture and sell the same type of drugs the competition among them is also one of the main reasons for fixing cheap price for the same drug.
Finally, there is no any proven truth in the myth that generic drugs are poor in quality or not best when compared to the brand name drugs. Only the name of drugs is different but the effects are equal the FDA applies the same standard for all the drug manufacturers. Many of the companies manufacture both brand name drugs as well as the generic name drugs. In fact, the FDA estimates that almost 50% of the generic drugs are manufactured by the brand name companies.
Do generic drugs take a long time to act?
This is one of the biggest misbelieve that people have in their mind. When the effects, side effects, working mechanism are same how could the generic drugs take a long time to act? This is very silly question arise in the minds of people. FDA requires that generic drugs work more effectively and faster as the branded drugs.
However, sometimes the generic drugs look different in structure, color, and flavor compared to the brand drugs. This is because the trademark laws in the United States never allow the generic drugs that look same as like the brand drugs. The ingredients and formula of preparing the generic drugs are same as the brand drugs but only the name of drugs is different and it has the same effect as the brand drugs.
